    THERMAL HISTORY OF THE CARNIC ALPS (NE ITALY-S. AUSTRIA) USING CAI ANALYSIS

    Thermal patterns of an area which underwent a polyphase deformation history such as the Carnic Alps were analyzed using the Colour Alteration Index (CAI) of conodonts in order to constrain some aspects of the metamorphic history of this part of the Southern Alps. Hercynian and alpine tectonothermal events were distinguished using CAI analysis.  The Hercynian event developed temperatures up to low metamorphic conditions. Alpine tectonogenesis did not produce thermal levels in excess of the diagenetic zone. Moreover, CAI patterns allow recognition and evaluation of a hydrothermal metamorphic overprint of Permo-Triassic or Oligocene age that was superimposed on the pre-existing regional metamorphic zonation. 

    Fluids mobilization in Arabia Terra, Mars: depth of pressurized reservoir from mounds self-similar clustering

    Arabia Terra is a region of Mars where signs of past-water occurrence are recorded in several landforms. Broad and local scale geomorphological, compositional and hydrological analyses point towards pervasive fluid circulation through time. In this work we focus on mound fields located in the interior of three casters larger than 40 km (Firsoff, Kotido and unnamed crater 20 km to the east) and showing strong morphological and textural resemblance to terrestrial mud volcanoes and spring-related features. We infer that these landforms likely testify the presence of a pressurized fluid reservoir at depth and past fluid upwelling. We have performed morphometric analyses to characterize the mound morphologies and consequently retrieve an accurate automated mapping of the mounds within the craters for spatial distribution and fractal clustering analysis. The outcome of the fractal clustering yields information about the possible extent of the percolating fracture network at depth below the craters. We have been able to constrain the depth of the pressurized fluid reservoir between ~2.5 and 3.2 km of depth and hence, we propose that mounds and mounds alignments are most likely associated to the presence of fissure ridges and fluid outflow. Their process of formation is genetically linked to the formation of large intra-crater bulges previously interpreted as large scale spring deposits. The overburden removal caused by the impact crater formation is the inferred triggering mechanism for fluid pressurization and upwelling, that through time led to the formation of the intra-crater bulges and, after compaction and sealing, to the widespread mound fields in their surroundings

    The objective of this document is the definition of a set of cartographic and technical standards and directions to be used, adapted or -in minor form -established for GMAP. Standards proposed and mentioned in the present documents include geologic and cartographic aspects. Some of the proposed directions and standards are initial ones that are planned to be refined and/or updated throughout the Europlanet H2024RI project, to be used within the VA activities and for future sustainable European planetarymapping efforts beyond the RI.The state of the art and relevant documents are included, as well as process-specific and body-specific best practice and exemplary published cases. The approaches for two-dimensional mapping and three-dimensional geologic mapping and modelling are introduced, as well as the range of non-standard map types that are envisaged within GMAP activities. Mapping review directions are indicated, as well data sharing, distribution and discovery.Proposed standards, best practice, andtools are based on existing ones or on additional or new developments and adaptations.Appendices are included and point to either individual developments or external resources and tools that will be maintained throughout the duration of the research infrastructure, and beyond it, through sustainability.The present document is going to be a live document permanently accessible on the GMAP wiki and periodically updated in form of a deliverable

    GWAS meta-analysis of over 29,000 people with epilepsy identifies 26 risk loci and subtype-specific genetic architecture

    Epilepsy is a highly heritable disorder affecting over 50 million people worldwide, of which about one-third are resistant to current treatments. Here we report a multi-ancestry genome-wide association study including 29,944 cases, stratified into three broad categories and seven subtypes of epilepsy, and 52,538 controls. We identify 26 genome-wide significant loci, 19 of which are specific to genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE). We implicate 29 likely causal genes underlying these 26 loci. SNP-based heritability analyses show that common variants explain between 39.6% and 90% of genetic risk for GGE and its subtypes. Subtype analysis revealed markedly different genetic architectures between focal and generalized epilepsies. Gene-set analyses of GGE signals implicate synaptic processes in both excitatory and inhibitory neurons in the brain. Prioritized candidate genes overlap with monogenic epilepsy genes and with targets of current antiseizure medications. Finally, we leverage our results to identify alternate drugs with predicted efficacy if repurposed for epilepsy treatment

    The Pre-Variscan Sequence of the Carnic Alps is exposed across the state border between north-east Italy and Austria. It includes Middle Ordovician to lower Pennsylvanian rocks that, although affected by both Variscan and Alpine orogenesesorogeny, preserve continuous and non-metamorphosed successionssequences. Depositional settings vary from shallow water to open marine environments. Remarkable is the presence of the largest Devonian reefs of Europe, and related deposits from back reef to fore-reef and basin. The field trip is organized as a pre-congress excursion of the 90th congress of the Italian Geological Society (Trieste, September 2021) and includes three days to visit the main localities of the central sector of the Carnic Alps, focusing on various aspects of stratigraphy, palaeontology and tectonics of the sequence
